Summary: This book examines the early immigration policies of Canada and provides critical insight into the events surrounding the Komagata Maru in 1914. On May 23, 1914, the Komagata Maru, a ship carrying 376 immigrants from British India, was turned away when it tried to land in Vancouver's harbour. The passengers on board, like Canadians at the time, were British subjects. They believed it was their right to settle anywhere in the empire, but they were wrong. Why did Canada refuse to let these South Asian migrants land, when it had accepted more the 400,000 immigrants the previous year? Why did this ship pose a threat to the mightiest empire the world has ever known? In this book, the author addresses these and other provocative questions.
